BBC: The Big Bang Machine, a great documental about the LHC

September 11th, 2008

If you have an hour take it to watch this fantastic BBC documental, released some days ago and called "The Big Machine", if you are in the UK you can watch it here.

Here's an introduction about it:

Professor Brian Cox visits Geneva to take a look around Cern's Large Hadron Collider before this vast, 27km long machine is sealed-off and the experiment to create the simulation of a black hole begins.

When it's up and running, it will be capable of creating the conditions that existed just a billionth of a second after the Big Bang. Brian joins the scientists who hope that the LHC will change our understanding of the early universe and solve some of its mysteries.

Spanish “scene” needs some labeling classes…

September 11th, 2008

While you can find something like...

"Speed.Racer.2008.DVDRiP.XViD-ARROW.CD1.avi" (Movie name (dot) year (dot) release type (dot) codec (slash) group (dot) cd num)... correct labeling,

if you search for a spanish release, you will find all names are like:
"crueldad.intolerable.Spanish.[DVDRIP].[Juegosypelis.COM].By.torrentmas.avi"

Website spam, "by".. no slashes, no year, no Capital Letters, "DVDIP"?
Seriously, what the hell is that?!

Ok, there are some nice groups that make correct labels (SEDG, etc...) but... for God's sake, please, take a breath, READ the f%$&ing manuals and follow the conventions like all others do.

You can find even worst things, people that stole video stream from other groups and join their bad audio recorded streams to make a new release, called... "TS-Screener", again, WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!

In the original Scene, if your label is not correct, your video is not in correct FPS or it's bad resized, you'll get your release "nuked", but here... "en fin"

Long life to the real scene, (HaRVeST, X-Force, ALLiANCE) the real ones.

Noise removal software for photographers

September 4th, 2008

I've been using some noise removal software for special situations like this one I show below, this picture was taken from the Top of the Rock, in the Rockefeller Building, New York.

If you look close, you'll clearly see noise specially at the sky, this crops are at 100%

The best two programs I've ever used are Neat Image and Noise Ninja, both available as a standalone program and a photoshop plugin.

Picturecode Noise Ninja: After some usage, I prefer this one. It's easy to use, fast, "cheap" and produces in my opinion, better results than Neat Image.

Neat Image: This one is also very nice but in my tests always producted more artifacts than Noise Ninja.

And... after applying a noise reduction program (in this case, Noise Ninja) the New York picture looks better:
