New Google Mobile App for iPhone, woow!

Today I tried the new version of Google Mobile App for iPhone, and I was surprised with the new voice search feature… just start the application, put the phone on your ear and speak, with the help of the proximity sensor the iPhone knows that you are speaking and recognizes your voice, in my first try the feature worked perfectly!

How to create i18n translations in Plone 3 themes

In this article I will explain how to create a Plone 3 theme basic skeleton and then, create i18n translation files to use them in our templates, in the Zope 3 way.

First step is to create the theme in the ZopeSkel way:

paster create -t plone3_theme plonetheme.yourtheme

Now, assuming that you already know how to create the Plone templates, let’s make the basic folder structure for i18n translation files, for example, we are gonna create English and Catalan translation for our template.

Edit the main configure.zcml file and add this line:

By doing this, you are indication Plone to search translations inside locales folder, so now lets create the folders structure necessary for our .po/.mo files.

Inside /locales, we need a folder containing the code of every language we want to create translations for, and inside them the LC_MESSAGES containing .po/.mo

/plonetheme.yourtheme
/plonetheme.yourtheme/locales/plonetheme.yourtheme.pot
/plonetheme.yourtheme/locales/en/LC_MESSAGES/plonetheme.yourtheme.po
/plonetheme.yourtheme/locales/es/LC_MESSAGES/plonetheme.yourtheme.po

Now we need to manually compile the .po files into .mo, because doing the translations in this way, Zope does not compile .po files in startup, so now, using msgfmt…

msgfmt -o plonetheme.yourtheme.mo plonetheme.yourtheme.po
msgfmt -o plonetheme.yourtheme.mo plonetheme.yourtheme.po

Plone will find now the translations and we can use them in our templates, to do that, we have to indicate the correct i18n domain in templates

That’s all! it works, seriously :)

Speed comparison between 3dsMax, Maya and Softimage XSI

And the “looser” is… Windows Vista!

3dspeedmachine.com has done a speed comparison between the three most famous 3D packages available: 3dsMax, Maya and Softimage XSI

They made some tests with Windows Vista and Windows XP (both 64bit) with different amount of geometry and the main problem detected is that the same machine with the same application, runs slower in Vista.

You can also see that XSI seems to be the fastest!

Pixar “Up” Theatrical Trailer now online

TrailerAddic has put a new theatrical trailer of “Up”, the upcoming Pixar movie, it starts showing some old hits and then the trailer starts.

I really LOVE this one! hope you like it. Pixar wants to make a movie per year and “Up” will be the next blockbuster of 2009.

Plone, one of the best Open Source CMS, is celebrating its day this November 7, a lot of activities are planned in different cities all around the world in order to promote, meet and discover the possibilities of this software in goverment, business and education.

If you are new or you don’t know anything about Plone, take some time and give it a try, yes it’s one of the hardest to develop, but once you get in… it’s harder to get out!

I’m working with Zope/Plone in SEMIC Internet, so following the open source community spirit, we are goint to sponsor WPD too and maybe doing something in Lleida.

The Pixar Story, a must see

I’ve discovered this documentary in the past edition of artFutura in Barcelona and it was great! my friends, myself, everybody love it, it was the best of all the activities that weekend.

It is a 80 minutes documentary that tells the whole story of Pixar, with interviews at John Lasseter, Ed Catmull, Steve Jobs, George Lucas, Tom Hanks, and lot more famous people related with the life of the company and their projects.

This is an absolutely must-see for every animator, designer, modeller and so on… it is not a simple story, it is a story about making a dream come true.

My new workstation!

I’ve been busy last week (no posts…) because I was building my new workstation, it’s all up and running now but I had some problems with the VGA, nothing that a motherboard BIOS update cannot fix ;)

Here are the specs:

nVidia GeForce GTX260 896MB DDR3
Samsung T220 22″ 16:9
